Cambodian Cancer Survivor Rejoices
Siden was 25 years old and newly married when she was diagnosed with a rare women’s cancer. She was hopeless at the thought never having children with her husband, Sokchea, and perhaps even dying so young.
But Siden was fortunate. She was diagnosed early at the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE by the medical staff there and by a visiting German gynecologist who had come to train the staff. Together, they made a plan to help treat Siden and to follow up with her chemotherapy treatment at another hospital.
“We were really hopeless but because of the skillful doctors, they brought us back hope,” said Sokchea. “And now my wife has given birth to a son and daughter for me- two children. Now, we are living very happily.”
Siden has been cancer free for five years now. Unfortunately, Siden is the exception in Cambodia where most women come into the SHCH with advanced cancer that cannot be successfully treated. This year, the SHCH started a Women’s Health Initiative to raise funds to establish The Women’s Wellness Center and to help more women in Cambodia have success stories like Siden’s.
